To lead a full life, away from health problems as much as possible, a good diet is needed, to keep stress under control and to avoid a sedentary lifestyle. However, meeting these basic standards is not always an easy task. How to avoid a sedentary lifestyle?
What is a sedentary lifestyle?
A sedentary person, according to the parameters established by the World Health Organization, is a person who does not reach the minimum daily recommended physical activity. A figure that is equivalent to 30 minutes, not necessarily continuous.
The WHO believes that the lack of mobility in contemporary societies is a serious problem. It is estimated that over 60% of the world’s population falls into the sedentary category. This is a fact directly related to the increase in serious health conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases.
The consequences of a sedentary lifestyle
Being overweight is usually considered an unmistakable synonym of a sedentary lifestyle. Although it is perhaps the most obvious consequence (not to say that its appearance does not always have a lack of physical activity as a trigger), it is not the only one.
Different conditions such as diabetes and hypertension are among the consequences. The same goes for episodes of anxiety or problems with self-esteem. With a sedentary lifestyle, muscles that do not exercise regularly progressively lose elasticity and strength, until they reach the point of being useless.
How to avoid a sedentary lifestyle?
The most advisable thing is to do regular physical activity, enrolling in the gym or pool. The most common idea is to opt for a gym, even if it is not the only one. Athletics and cycling are sports that can be practiced outdoors and that are excellent alternatives.
Tennis, football, basketball, swimming and many others: the possibilities are numerous. A 30-minute daily walk from Monday to Friday will also be very useful.
But, feel a little. To avoid a sedentary lifestyle, it is not absolutely necessary to enroll in the gym or carry out one of the sports we just talked about. It is possible to include the daily physical activities that the body needs within the daily routine even just by applying small variations that do not involve drastic changes.
To go to the office, to the supermarket or to school. Whenever possible, walking is a task that should not be avoided. If it is not possible to go to work without a car, parking it from a distance is a valid alternative for walking a little every day. The same happens when it comes to using elevators and escalators.
To get speed and intensity, the bicycle is an ideal daily means of transport. Moreover, it does not pollute. Even roller skates are a possibility to take into consideration to avoid a sedentary lifestyle.
Move to work
Most of us do jobs that force our long hours at the computer. But that doesn’t mean that we have to spend our day without moving off the desk.
The simple fact of answering the cell phone is a good time to get up from the chair. For example, to communicate information to a colleague, walk towards his place in the office and talk in person is preferable to the gesture of sending a message via WhatsApp or in chat.
Holiday periods are ideal to avoid a sedentary lifestyle. There are many options, like swimming on a beach or hiking in the mountains. Spending time walking through the city you live in is also a simple idea for moving. These are all activities that will allow you to move your body and sweat.
Dance sessions are gaining more followers. Caribbean rhythms like salsa or reggaeton are specially designed to move the body. Furthermore, it has been shown that the benefits of practicing this activity in everyday life are many more than those generated by many traditional sports.
Although adaptation to physical activity should take place gradually, the benefits derived from avoiding a sedentary lifestyle will appear almost immediately. And once the body gets used to moving, you can no longer stop.
